The thermocline is the depth where temperature changes sharpest with depth — a temperature cliff between warm surface water and cold deep water.

Why it's valuable

⚠️ Common misconception

Fish do NOT live ON the thermocline. The gradient is too steep to settle in. Fish sit on the flat ground beside the cliff — at the mixed-layer base just below it (cold-water species) or in the warm epilimnion above (warm-water species).
